At maintenance and development of existent systems, reverse engineering has to be used when the documentation and the design are inferior. With the use of reverse engineering an attempt is made to extract a requirement- and design specification from the source code. This document describes what reverse engineering is, how it is used in software engineering projects and how it should be evaluated after its use.
