A Story of One's Own: A Non-Linear Approach to Experience Design.

Carla Drago · 2005

Can a framework for active and participatory experience design be informed by non-linear methodologies of narrative? If so, how might this framework be applied to the design of interactive TV? Drawing correlations between ‘experience’, as understood by information architects, and ‘story’, as understood by film and television practitioners, this paper begins by considering the importance of storytelling in the design of interactive forms of media. Suggesting that more traditional forms of storytelling are no longer compelling in a data soaked age, the paper goes on to outline the concept of Rhizomatics, as described by Deleuze and Guattari, proffering it as a potentially useful basis for an experience design framework in interactive multimedia contexts. The paper finally examines the possible application of such a framework to interactive TV, describing examples of applications that have already successfully employed rhizomatic principles in their design, demonstrating how they have not only enhanced user experience but also enabled users to become creators of the very content they consume.
