Covariance matrix tapers and derivative constraints in the directions of jammers have been proposed for broadening the null in adap- tive processing, thereby improving the algorithms' robustness. In this cor- respondence, the relationship between these two methods is explored. I. INTRODUCTION Two different methods—covariance matrix tapers (1)-(5) and con- straints in the directions of jammers (6)-(9)—have been described in the literature for broadening nulls in the directions of interference. In response to Guerci's paper on covariance matrix tapers (1), this cor- respondence uncovers the relationship between these algorithms. The correspondence is organized as follows. In Section II, known covari- ance versions of both algorithms are described. In Section III, the re- lationship between the algorithms is derived, and the algorithmic and finite sample implementations of both algorithms are discussed in Sec- tions IV and V, where it is shown that the usual implementation of the multiple constraint method is, in fact, a type of covariance matrix taper. Conclusions are drawn in Section VI.
