A new tablet for writing characters by hand is presented using amorphous magnetic wires which sensitive Matteucci effect for a vertical ac magnetic field. The Matteucci voltage eM with double frequency pulse shaped ac voltage is induced between both ends of an amorphous wire when its arbitrary point is vertically magnetized with a pen-shaped coil having an amorphous magnetic core. Values of eM are almost constant for pen sliding along with the wire and rapidly decrease for pen displacement vertical to the wire. Each amorphous wire matrix with all 10 wires having 5-mm intervals for X and Y directions was formed, in which each Matteucci voltage was converted to each dc voltage through peakholders. Hand written characters are displayed on a micro-computer display using a multiplexer, AD converter, and a position detection soft wear.
