A job shop model for software development and maintenance organizations with multiple projects

John Stephen Davis, C.A. Leonhard · 1990

The current approaches to modeling software development and maintenance organizations have several problems. Some promote specific technologies which inhibit technology comparisons and technology transfer. None adequately address software maintenance, support activities, small projects and multiple project environments. In this research, we explore the use of a job shop model for software development and maintenance organizations. We discuss some advantages of a job shop approach. We then develop, implement and validate a job shop model for the stochastic processes of software development and maintenance. We conclude with a discussion of some uses of the model and suggest directions for further research.
