Chaos based image encryption is given much attention in the current research on information security. In this paper a novel image encryption scheme using a 3D chaotic dissipative flow based on Lorenz attractor is proposed. In this encryption scheme, the image is viewed as a 3D cube which demonstrates that the confusion and diffusion can be integrated as one process, then the Lorenz attractor is used directly for image encryption through the generation of confusion matrix. Through this process, we also demonstrate that confusion matrix has all the properties of a random walk. In effect, this ensures the property of ergodicity which states that almost every initial point will move to almost any position in the state space with equal probability as the system evolves in time. Random walk thus generated using chaos theory ensures the unpredictability. The scheme is demonstrated to be secure and efficient against the commonly known attacks.
