Target tracking using passively sensed transient signals
Dragana Carević · 2003
An algorithm for tracking an underwater target in clutter using time delay measurements derived from short duration acoustic emissions, or transients radiated by the target, is presented. To account for the effects on the time delay estimates due to acous- tic propagation in uncertain underwater environments, the time delay measurement errors between pairs of sensors are modelled using Gaussian mixture distribu- tions. The target is assumed to be moving linearly with constant velocity and depth. The proposed approach utilises an iterative maximum likelihood optimasation technique based on the expectation-maximisation (EM) algorithm, where, in each iteration a nonlinear least squares technique is used to compute the target model parameter estimates.
