Angle-of-arrival estimation error due to the presence of coherent multipath planewaves

V. Shahmirian, Selin Kesler · 2003

An analysis is presented of the performance of a singular valued decomposition (SVD) based method for estimating the angles of arrival of the radiating sources. This method, proposed by R. Kumaresen and D.W. Tufts (see IEEE Trans. Aerosp. Elect. Syst. vol.AES-19, p.134-139, Jan. 1983), is called the modified forward-backward linear production (MFBLP) and is based on the SVD of the data matrix. As a result of forward-backward averaging, the coherency between two coherent multipath signals is removed to the extent that, the intersignal correlation becomes a function of the cosine of the constant phase angle. The MFLB method is analyzed in the presence of two coherent multipath signals, and an expression for the RMS error of the estimated angle-of-arrival is derived in terms of physical parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio, the angle separation the constant phase, and number of snapshots.>
