Interfacing Ada and relational databases

L. Scott McCoy · ACM SIGAda Ada Letters · 1987

With the advent of the Ada* language, relational database manufacturers are faced with the task of interfacing their databases to a language based on the object-oriented model. This paper discusses the benefits gained from interfacing Ada to a relational DBMS, with ORACLE* Pro*Ada used as a concrete example. Two approaches to interfacing Ada and a DBMS are discussed: one which was based on the alpha testing the author performed on Pro*Ada, and one based on retrieving rows in a record format. The paper concludes with a discussion of the Government request for an SQL to Ada interface, as well as general issues for DBMS interfaces.
