This paper provides a simple performance comparison between the extended and unscented Kalman filters when applied to angles based relative navigation technique. The study identifies performance advantages and disadvantages of the unscented Kalman filter. First, a brief description and comparison of the two filters is given. The relative motion dynamics is then discussed for both the linearized and the nonlinear orbital motion. The performance comparison is performed for three distinct relative motion scenarios. Specific attention is placed on the filters’ ability to extract estimated range information from the nonlinear angles based relative navigation technique.
