Study of a code division multiplexing technique with short orthogonal coding sequences and application to an indoor diffused IR network

The dominant view that code division multiplexing (CDM) is always wasteful of bandwidth, when compared to alternative multiplexing schemes is disputed. The authors show that a synchronous CDM technique with short orthogonal coding sequences can be employed in a network with inherent bandwidth restrictions, such as an indoor-diffused-infrared (IR) wireless link, offering a higher 'simultaneously active user's capacity’ than conventional CDM (PN codes) and time division multiplexing (TDM) schemes. A set of equations for predicting the network's performance and user's capacity for different CDM schemes is derived, the results are verified by computer simulation and laboratory prototype implementation.
