The Role of Inequalities in the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity

Franklin John · SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics · 1966

Inequalities are seen to be the unifying feature in many recent investigations. On the one hand a formulation of the basic problems purely in terms of partial differential equations and boundary equations may be physically unrealistic. On the other hand we see in the general mathematical theory of partial differential equations that a priori inequalities not only are at the core of all existence and uniqueness questions but also express more subtle qualitative roperties of solutions.
