Gencral-purpose digital signal proccssor (DSP) chips are now equipped with higher speeds and improvcd instruction sets. The inclusion of an advanced DSP in facsimile (fax) machines can provide compact implementation of standard functions and accommodate an exciting set of additional features. We report that in addition to modem signal processing functions, DSP chips can now efficiently implemcnt functions such as data compression and error control coding. New features that will soon be commonplace include: faster fax through higher speed modems (V.33); color fax with the help of PEG compression algorithm; integrated fax, voicemail, and voiceband modems; and G3 fax through digital networks. An advanced DSP chip plays a central role in the implementation of these features.
