By all accounts, the structured approach to software development is no longer the dominant paradigm. Object orientation (OO) is at the forefront of technology today, and a deep understanding of this phenomenon is required to effectively manage the transition to this approach. While there are many who assert that OO is a fundamentally different approach to software development and, therefore, constitutes a paradigm shift, there are others who assert that OO has evolved from prior ideas in software engineering. This research uses a philosophy of science framework to explore paradigmatic changes that may have occurred in the field of software development. Specifically, it applies the Kuhnian notion of paradigm shift to understand the evolution of software development processes. It also proposes Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA) as a viable method
