Standardization of ATM

J. Gechter, P. O'Reilly · 2003

The authors argue that although the technical feasibility of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) for broadband transport at 150 Mb/s is not questioned, the state of system definition is such that they cannot unequivocally support ATM as a concept for standardization. They argue that there is danger in premature standardization of system parameters when the system concept is still in flux. They suggest that there are four major areas where the system concept needs to be clarified before standardization can proceed. These are grade-of-service, accounting, compatibility, and scaling. These areas are discussed in detail.>
