The research aims to explore the legibility of Chinese characters in computer 3D virtual reality environment. The check-in area of second terminal of Chiang Kai-Shek international Airport was simulated into a virtue reality environment by 3DMAX. A set of Chinese characters was then placed in the environment for reviewing 40 participants were asked to read out Chinese characters on the computer screen. The independent variables include: fonts, backgrounds, positions and whether the characters are meaningful or not. The dependent variables include: responding time and viewing angles. It was found that fonts, viewing angles, positions and whether the characters are meaningful or not might affect the legibility. The effect of background did not seem to be obvious to the legibility. The complexity of the backdrops might distract the viewers’ attention, however the degree of its effeft remains to be examined.
