Techniques for detecting line-of-sight in humans have been studied, but have not been sufficiently developed for practical application. In the current study, the authors planned to use line-of-sight for a computer interface, and also to apply it to human engineering research. This new method is operable using line-of-sight only. Neither accessories nor sensors are required. An image obtained with a video camera allows the algorithm to extract the feature points of the operator's face and the center of iris, and to convert these data into the direction of his face and line-of-sight. The operator's line-of-sight is displayed on the monitor as a cursor, and it is sufficiently accurate for practical applications. Moreover, it offers virtually real-time processing. This technique can be used in input devices for handicapped persons, in virtual reality applications, and in human engineering research.
