The authors propose an original method of entropy evaluation and variation in finite state machine (FSM) state assignment. As has been shown by Nemani and Najm (1996) power consumption in the FSM combinational part depends on the entropy of inputs and outputs of the FSM combinational circuit. Their work is a continuation of this result. They consider a higher design level and propose a method of entropy evaluation during FSM state assignment. It provides an opportunity to control switching frequency inside a future combinational circuit. They concentrate on practical implementation of the state assignment method for changing the entropy value in the designed FSM.
