Distributed intelligent actuators and sensors (DIASs) are discussed. The DIAS project is the first stage towards realization of integrated automation within a control, maintenance and technical management system (CMMS). The concept of control islands, maintenance islands, and technical management islands is discussed. DIAS subsystems, methodology and demonstration sites are described.>
