Modeling The Development From Novice To Expert Human Planners
C.B. Fiebig, C.C. Hayes · 2005
In order to develop critiquing, tutoring, knowledge acquisition, and management training strategies that are effective for a broad range of people wit% varied experience it is necessary to understand how human planners’ behavior, knowledge structure and problem solving strategies evolve over time as a novice becomes an expert in a given domain. In this paper we will examine the development stages of expert knowledge and problem solving behavior for planning domains. We examine planning in two seemingly different domains, the creation of manufacturing plans and of software development plans, and present a single framework to describe the development stages in both domains. Past models of novice to expert development typically involved more limited domains. Our framework examines changes in planning strategy and knowledge types learned in the continuous development from novice to expert. This model provides additional richness of understanding required for design of effective teaching strategies and software tools.
