A new runlength limited code for binary asymmetric channels

In write-once optical data storage, one is faced with an asymmetry between marks and non-marks due to the practical lower limit of the mark size. This is due to the fact that with increasing information density, the lengths of the non-marks diminish, but the marks cannot be made arbitrarily small. Van Uijen er al provided experimental evidence that coding techniques adapted to such an asymmetric channel would successfully combat the effect of intersymbol interference. Asymmetrical runlength-limited sequences can be characterised by four parameters (α, β, γ, δ) in the NRZ format, where (α and β are the minimum runlength of 0's, and 1's, respectively, and γ and δ are the maximum runlength of 0's and 1's, respectively.
