Contextual Prototyping: A Novel Privacy Study Approach

Loren Terveen, Changqing Zhou, Pamela J. Ludford · 2005

Emerging ubiquitous computing and location-aware applications have the potential to deliver novel and compelling functionality; however, they raise significant privacy concerns. Much prior work has investigated people’s attitudes and concerns about privacy. However, the major methods used have been surveys and interviews, and these methods have a significant limit: people’s projections of their behavior in and concerns about hypothetical usage situations often differ from their actual behavior in such situations. We propose a new method to avoid this problem: contextual prototyping situates requirements gathering in the context of prototype applications “filled in ” with people’s own data. We believe that this method will provide a unique and more reliable picture of user privacy requirements and concerns.
