Abstract A BASIC Program for divisive clustering is proposed. The algorithm of Macnaughton‐Smith is used to improve the variance criterion. No distance matrix is needed and in this way large numbers of objects can be handled. An application of the program to the classification of 20 european brandies is demonstrated. The listing of the program is given in the appendix.
