The variation in RTT of smooth TCP
Elvis M. Vieira, Michael Bauer · 2006
Due to the way that Standard TCP is defined, it inherently provokes variation in round-trip time (RTT). A variation of TCP, referred to as Smooth TCP can, however, be configured to minimize such variations. In this paper, we review how Smooth TCP is defined and compare it with Standard TCP in an environment subject to packet errors. Such problems are very common in wireless networks, where sometimes Standard TCP considers a packet loss erroneously as a packet drop and as a consequence, large variations in RTT are introduced.
