Multimedia sensor networks for ISR applications

James A. DeBardelaben · 2004

Recent advances in MEMS technology, low-power multimedia signal processing algorithms, and wireless communication technologies have made autonomous microsensor networking technology a viable solution for solving a wide range of remote-monitoring problems. Wireless microsensor networks are particularly attractive for military ISR applications because of their potential for rapid, covert deployment and persistent surveillance for wide area search, detection, and cueing. In this paper, we survey techniques that can be applied at each layer of the network protocol stack to produce clandestine, power-efficient wireless microsensor network implementations.
