Letter Four “Firsts” in Telephony
Basilio Catania · European Transactions on Telecommunications · 1999
Abstract At the beginning of telephony, it soon became evident that telephone lines required better conductors, with larger cross‐section, with respect to telegraph lines, as well as measures to counteract the skin effect. Moreover, inductive loading allowed doubling the range of the line. Call signaling systems, anti‐sidetone circuits and measures to insure the quietness of the environment must also be devised. This letter reminds the pioneering work of Antonio Meucci in all these areas.
