This report summarizes the proceedings of a workshop on polymers in the generation, storage, transmission, and distribution of electric power. The workshop was sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and organized by Professors Timothy A. Barbari and Ronald K. Eby of Johns Hopkins University. It was held in Baltimore, Maryland on March 15--17, 1989. The primary objective was to bring scientists/engineers together with representatives of EPRI to examine the scientific and technological significance of polymers to the utility industry as well as to recommend promising areas for follow-up EPRI projects/workshops that will focus on specific details of sub-fields. Thirty-two participants from industry, government and academia presented and discussed overviews of developments in both polymers and the electric power industry. These presentations were followed by working group meetings concerned with three areas: Mechanical and Structural Properties, Electrical and Optical Properties, and Chemical and Thermal Properties. Two recurring themes appeared in the discussions of all three working groups: coatings/surfaces/interfaces and sensors for a wide range of applications. The working groups also recommended that a number of polymer classes be given particular attention.
