Data transfer via TCP/IP over both an Ethernet (10 Mbit/sec) and a HIPPI (800 Mbit/sec) LAN is analyzed with the help of the NIST MultiKron** low perturbation data collection hardware. These accurate measurements provide a good understanding of the protocol bottlenecks which limit the realization of the underlying channel bandwidth. For the purpose of these experiments, a UNIX* operating system was chosen with a typical implementation of TCP/IP in its kernel. The only modification done to this commercially available kernel was to add the measurement probe code necessary to interface to the memory mapped MultiKron. Each measurement probe consists of only a single assignment statement.
