On Hilbert's thirteenth problem for soft computing

Владик Крейнович, Hung Tan Nguyen · 2002

We discuss aspects of computation and implementation in soft computing when applying arithmetic of interval analysis to fuzzy quantities. Evoking Kolmogorov's solution (1957) to Hilbert's thirteenth problem (on numerical computations, and whether functions of several variables can be represented as functions of fewer variables), we show that the situation is different in soft computing. As a result, we provide a rationale for implementing hardware supported functions of more than two variables.>
