The solution of simple and compound word problems

Students of problem-solving, in common with students of learning theory, decision-making, and other cognitive processes, live in a state of constant frustration at their inability to observe what goes on inside the problemsolver's head. Since direct observation is impossible, other methods for investigating the problem-solving process must be developed. One strategy which has been used successfully in investigating other cognitive processes the construction of mathematical models. This paper reports an experiment test one such model.
