Ronald K. McMurdy, Badrinath Roysarn · 1993

A merhvd ro reduce zhe overage operation rime, and increase [he rranger rare of RAID-5 disk arrays is presented, dong wilh quanfitarive mo&ls for these paramaers us a funcrion of load. The modrJied controller allocutes moderate sired files (1-20 sectors), and wiry informalion for groups of consecarive secrors, entirely on one disk, avoiding the compounding of latency and queuing delaysfor multiple dish. Detailed simulations of m@ed und srondord MD5 arrays, a non-retlarndant disk array, a RAID4 array, both ~ynchronized and unsynchronized RAID-3 arrays, in a UNIX enviromnt, are used to show an 11 % increase in traqfer rates, and a 10% &creme in operation rimes.
