Possible countermeasures against Bluetooth holes

Pushpa R. Suri, Sona Rani · International Conference on Communications · 2006

The problems facing hardware designers attempting to secure Bluetooth enabled devices is that they often have very limited memory and processing power. Such restrictions will often limit the cryptographic complexity of algorithms, encryption key lengths, and amount of available entropy. The key size and entropy pool for cryptographic functions to secure data transmissions and support digital certificates for secure authorization is limited. Therefore, it could be possible to brute-force the encrypted data off-line. A Bluetooth device is at its most vulnerable during the initial pairing. If the attacker captures the Personal Identification Number (PIN) during the initial pairing, he or she could easily derive the link key. Our paper discusses the problems in bluetooth and possible countermeasures of it.
