A random access model for cellular mobile communication systems

Kyung Sup Kwak, Kyung Chul Choi, Gak Jin Choi · 2002

In radio communication systems, capture arises due to different locations in transmitters or different times of arrivals of packets onto the receiver and thus improves the overall system performance. In cellular mobile communication systems the transmitted signals may be experienced in serious variations because of shadowing and fading from dense and high-rise buildings. So the receiver of a base station may decode one of many signals due to different power levels or different times of arrival. The authors model and analyze, using a multiband concept, a random access system for cellular radio mobile networks. Mobile stations are assumed uniformly distributed over a cell and the cell is composed of many circularly disjoint bands with equal width from a base station. Then capture may naturally occur from the different bands of different locations. The authors derive the performance of the system, and show that the performance is remarkable as the number of bands increases.>
