Line Element Chain Coding (LECC) method, which orients two-dimensional structure descriptive coding, for two-level pictures is proposed. This method encodes direction, coordinate, length, width, and shape of segment. Shape is encoded by nine types of line element chain codes. Compression rate for CCITT's test charts, vector representation coding and progressive picture coding as application of this method are described.
