The symbols apply equally well for all nonshear fracture surfaces in a variety of materials and scales examined so far. It is believed that all such fractures can be described graphically in this manner regardless of material type and loading condition in a scale range of seven or more orders of magnitude. This fact needs to be clearly established and widely recognized in order that observations made at the submicroscopic, microscopic, megascopic, and perhaps larger scales can be interrelated for the benefit of investigators in different fields of physical science.
