Some notes about semantic regularity of some polysemantic words
Alexander D. Oguy · Journal of Quantitative Linguistics · 1998
The manifold diversity of existing phenomena is the main reason for polysemy as for linguistic universals realised in the “network”; (Lehrer, 1974, p. 7) of the semantic structures of polysemantic words. The quantitative analysis of systemic polysemy can call for developing new ideas about general regularities of the lexical‐semantic system of language as a whole (Tuldava, 1987, p. 133). As the central goal of science is the discovery of objective patterns and their investigation (cf. Bunge, 1967, p. 345), the observed (semantic in this case) regularities must be proved on a quantitative basis. Deductive (from the higher level) and inductive (linking evidence with generalisation) approaches are to be taken into consideration. The search for regularities on this basis is the main purpose of the following article.
