A Bidirectional Route Repair Method for Wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Shih‐Chang Huang, H.-Y. Chang · The Computer Journal · 2014

A bidirectional route repair method (BRRM) was proposed to accelerate the route repair procedure in ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing. When an old route disconnects, both the source and destination start the route discovery simultaneously to shorten the disconnection duration. A novel mechanism was proposed to control the protocol overhead introduced during the route discovery phase. In addition, a density-based method was proposed for minimizing the hop count in the repaired route and improving the successful probability of repairing the route. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can reduce the route construction time by more than 20% compared with the AODV routing protocol. This method can also eliminate ∼10–20% of the nodes that participate in relaying protocol messages during the route discovery procedure. Furthermore, the BRRM can be used to retain the same number of hops after route reconstruction. The proposed density-based method can be used to reduce the failure probability of route reconstruction by almost 50%.
