The swingby mechanism analyzed with a new graphical formalism for three-dimensional elastic collisions

We introduce a simple graphical formalism for analyzing three-dimensional elastic collisions using energy and momentum conservation. We use the formalism to elucidate the physics of the swingby mechanism. As an example we treat the encounter of Pioneer 10 with Jupiter in 1973.
