The paper presents experience with building tools for the development of parallel applications and for load balancing using a library of migrating sockets. Based on this experience, design ideas for a tool environment which supports metacomputer applications are presented. These ideas are related to aspects of tools development for the Globus system. 1 Introduction When developing a program for modern computer architectures, it is crucial to have tools, which support the design, debugging, testing, and evaluation phases of program development. However, building parallel tools which meet requirements imposed by a metacomputer system and users is a tough task.
