The 70th anniversary of ionospheric sounding

Routine sounding of the ionosphere is 70 years old. This article describes its origins, starting from the pioneering trans-Atlantic transmission of 1901, and its development from 1931 to the present day, together with some recent directions in research using ionosonde data.
