In this paper, a two-level optimization approach is developed for the conceptual and preliminary design of airframe structures. The conceptual design, which is carried out at the higher level, aims mainly at configuration design solved by using response surface approximation. The preliminary design, involving a single objective multidisciplinary optimization, constitutes the lower level. GOLD (Guided Optimization Linking Demo,) a graphical package which automates this methodology, is developed to reduce the design cycle time. For easy modification of configuration layout and pre- and post- processing, MIDAS (Multidisciplinary Interactive Design & Analysis System,) is used as a graphical interface. At the lower level, ASTROS (Automated STRuctural Optimization System) is employed for multidisciplinary optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated by the optimization of an Intermediate Complexity Wing model.
