Recent Trends and Techniques in Speech Coding

Analysis-by-synthesis predictive coding of speech has recently become the dominant approach to efficient coding of speech at bit rates ranging from 4 to 16 kb/s. Some of the techniques already in use or currently being investigated include vector quantization, structured codebooks for reducing complexity, adaptive postfiltering, interframe predictive coding of speech parameters, backward adaptation for low delay coding, phonetic segmentation, adaptive postfiltering, and pseudo-Gray coding of channel symbols.
