Abstract It is explained how the grand partition function method can be used to discuss a) simple defects statistics in which one transition takes place; b) defect statistics in which two transitions take place (Frenkel or Schottky defects); c) more complex statistics. The latter is illustrated by a treatment of a mixture of Schottky and Frenkel defects, not previously discussed in generality.
