How to reduce 3-D gray-scale mathematical morphology to 2-D

Y. B. Karasik · IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing · 1999

A planar encoding of three-dimensional (3-D) images, which is commutative with respect to set and gray-scale morphological operations, is proposed. Such an encoding indicates a way to reduce 3-D set and mathematical morphology operations to two-dimensional (2-D) ones.
