Optimal information retrieval from complex low frequency backgrounds in medical images

Robert H. Johnson, Alan C. Nelson, R.M. Haralick, Mitchell M. Goodsitt · 2003

The application of image processing techniques to digital/filmless radiographs is studied. Planar X-ray images are generated using high-resolution photostimulable phosphor plate technology. The images' information content is optimized by repeated application of morphological closing and opening operations followed by a convolution and a subtraction. A broad variety of medical images are improved by offline, interactive application of similar processing methods. Criteria that may form the basis for image processing decisions such as structuring element size and the suitability of probability quantization are suggested.>
