Official statistics from Facebook tell us that, “More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc) are shared each month”, and that “people spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook”. When Twitter celebrated its fifth birthday in March, it posted a few impressive stats of its own about its growth: from the date of the first-ever tweet, it took three years, two months and one day for the billionth tweet to be sent. Today, there are more than a billion tweets sent every week.
