Abstract We have designed and built GRAPE-2 (GRAvity PipE 2), the second experimental machine for gravitational many-body systems. GRAPE-2 is designed to calculate the dynamical evolution of astronomical collisional systems which require an accuracy higher than that provided by GRAPE-1, our first experimental machine. GRAPE-2 has a word length of 32/64 bits and calculates gravitational forces at the speed of 40 Mflops. It has been built on a 43 cm by 32 cm board.
