Computer Literacy, School Mathematics and Problem Solving: Three for the Price of One
Frederick H. Bell · AEDS Journal · 1979
Joint research and development efforts between the University of Pittsburgh and Upper St. Clair High School near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, indicate that it is feasible to integrate computer literacy and high-level problem solving with the school-mathematics and college curricula without sacrificing mathematics education programs. Incorporating computers and computing into high-school mathematics courses and college teacher-education courses had no negative effects upon students' achievement levels and attitudes toward mathematics and had a positive effect upon their attitudes toward computers. It was found that integrating problem solving and computer literacy with standard school or college mathematics programs can aid in resolving some of the problem-solving, mathematics-education, and computer-literacy “crises” in American education.
