Inferring Formal Titles in Organizational Email Archives
Galileo Mark, S. Namata · 2006
In the social network of large groups of people, such as companies and organizations, formal hierarchies with titles and lines of authority are established to define the responsibilities and order of power within that group. Although this information may be readily available for individuals within that group, the context this hierarchy provides in communications is not available to those outside the group. In this paper, we define the problem of inferring this formal hierarchy in the context of organizational email archives. We present a new dataset for the widely used Enron email dataset, for use with analysis of the Enron social network hierarchy. We then provide some preliminary results on the problem of classifying individuals to their formal titles using standard classification algorithms. 1
