Memory reference locality has been the basic assumption for many design decisions in computer systems.Shared memory multiprocessor systems are even more heavily dependent on memory locality for their claimed performance. The arrangement of functions in a program affects memory reference locality and thus the performance. In this paper we study the problems related to function ordering in shared memory multiprocessor systems and present the experiment results of our OFL (Ordering For Locality) compiler for the Sequent shared memory systems.Significant performance improvement on real world programs is observed.
